Hi Shane,
Yes, I do support Freegans and think it is an important to not waste. Instead of diving I am aware of everything I throw out and if I can use it in any way I do. Trust me, I have more glass jars catching rain, holding sponges, dispensing soap, housing salad dressing, and plants growing out of plastic bottles, and you can pretty much turn anything into a cat toy, etc...I think it is important that we all do are part.
Thank you for your comment.
Peace to you as well!

Yo yo Cara,

It's nice to hear your support for freegans (at least that was sorta the impression I got). That you recognise that it's not somethin you can do but that you recognise the importance of it.

There are a few things I'd like to point out much like Cindy. It's easy to think that the dumpster looks a lot like the one that is in the back of an apartment. (read: skanky, filled with diapers, smelly, and disgusting). I don't dive those unless I need electronics and usually I can find that from an electronics store hah.

Why do I dive? More because I can't stand the waste. I'm growing my own food and use the dumpstered food to offset. But I recognise that this isn't for everyone. But thanks for the support man and being a vegan is hard enough.

Oh and I should point out the entire meat factor ain't for me as a freegan either. Mmm no thanks on the meat been off that for 2 years or more. Not that I care if Freegans do eat that just not my bag.

Peace bro

Cindy,
My apologies for any ignorance to the Freegan movement. In the first sentence I did say I was just going to skim the topic and provide links for people to learn more. I gave yours in fact. I am glad you sent this comment to add more depth to this entry. It is welcomed.
I will try to make it on Friday. Thank you for the invitation. Do you all do this every Friday?
Again, I meant no offense.
Take care,
Cara

nice to know that even though you seem to be in nyc and were writing a blog on the freegans, you never bothered to come for a visit! despite the scare mongering, the unfortunate truth is that most of the food tossed at the end of the day is fresh, usable, and not mixed with any actual trash. i love to cook a good healthy (and vegan!) meal and sit down at a table too, which is why i dumpster dive instead of begging greasy hotbar or dairy-laden pizza from places at the end of the day. last night i took home a huge bag of fresh vegetables and fruit, a sealed package of tofu, and a few whole wheat rolls from an italian bakery. come join us for a community dinner this friday the 21st (5:30pm to help cook and at 8pm to eat! 123 Community Space, 123 Tompkins at Myrtle in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, G train to Myrtle-Willoughby) and be prepared to eat your words, but also lots of good, healthy, vegan food!

p.s. the geraldo piece was only a couple years ago, and those “original” freegans are all still actively and happily foraging!
